This series look at private collections/collecting for the home. Members are invited into private homes for an intimate view of private collections and an opportunity to see works not in the public domain.  We also hope to expose members to the passion behind the collecting and make collecting a Friends’ experience.

About this collection: modern and contemporary, these terms are often used interchangeably, but in art history modern came before contemporary.  Aside from time, there are also differences in method, medium, and approach – which results in further differentiation into art movements.  Most museum or gallery exhibitions focus on one or few related movements.  It is thus rare to see museum-quality artworks from different periods set out side-by-side.  At this Private Collectors’ penthouse, a Maja Marx hang alongside one by Irma Stern; there are Erik Laubscher’s (see image) and Jacob van Schalkwyk’s.  It is not that art history is unimportant to the Collectors but perhaps their interest in the “art of our times” covers a longer time span.

The collection also includes rare works that caught the collectors’ knowing eye, for instance a tapestry designed by Cecil Skotnes commissioned and woven in Portugal.  The tapestries (of which there were 4) references the Skotnes’ iconography and style – the distinctive figures, the masklike heads, the landscape – but with a different colour palette, one that respects the rich texture of tapestry.
