Themes is a series looking at some of the broad concepts that drive creativity, across the disciplines – visual arts, music, performance, architecture and design.  For each concept, two creatives are invited to consider how a particular theme informs their work.

The 8th iteration explores “sculpting”.  Sculpting is associated with sculpture, the end result, but sculpting itself is a process.  This process is the focus of the two talks by architect Philip Stiekema and fashion designers Alexandra Höjer and Barry Armitage.

Philip Stiekema is a partner in Team Architects, a Cape Town-based architecture firm.  Most people think of architecture as the walls and other structures of a building, but Stiekema thinks of the space as the architecture, with the walls containing and describing the space.  The terms “positive” and “negative” spaces are helpful in fine art: for sculpture, the mass is the “positive” space, for Stiekema’s architecture, the emptiness within is the “positive” space.  Find out more

Alexandra Höjer and Barry Armitage are fashion designers of the brands Alexandra Höjer Atelier and METRO=HANDMADE.  Armitage starts with an envisaged form for his clothing which he abstractly flattens into a pattern.  The two-dimensional is not so much rendered but interpreted back into the three-dimensional via the making process and the choice of fabrics.  Höjer prefers to start with the fabric, and through an intuitive dialogue with its materiality, “sculpt” out the clothing.  The two will discuss their individual practices as well as their collaboration.  Find out more
