Themes is a series looking at some of the broad concepts that drive creativity, across the disciplines – visual arts, music, performance, architecture and design.  For each concept, two creatives are invited to consider how a particular theme informs their work.

In this, the 7th iteration, we explore paper.  Paper is ubiquitous, not just in art but in everyday life, such that it is easy to take the material for granted.  Yet paper can affect an artwork in how it absorbs or repels paper, ink, and paint.  Different paper creates different sense of the haptic, how we “feel” something with our eyes, from the most delicate tissues that read as air to felted solids that we see as a mass not just as a surface.  Our two speakers discuss how working with this enriching medium affects their practice.

Jacob van Schalkwyk is a writer and visual artist.  As an artist he is interested in experimenting with form, and as such working with paper is an inspiring challenge.  Besides paper, he also works extensively with paint, film, assemblage and installation.  He has recently returned to paper and this talk is a great opportunity to hear of his plans for new experimentation.  Van Schalkwyk studied at the Pratt Institute in New York City (2003) and completed his MAVA in Sculpture at Stellenbosch University (2018), where he currently teaches drawing and painting.  Find out more: <http://www.jacobvanschalkwyk.com/new>

Warren Editions is one of the go-to studios for artists interested in working with fine art printmaking.  In printmaking an image is not made directly onto paper but is transferred there via a process.  In this way both the printmaking process and the paper also serves as an indirect translator of the image.  Indeed this is one reason why artists are attracted to the medium.  Master printer Zhané Warren will speak on printmaking, working with artists, and how different papers impact an artwork as the transferred carrier of the image.  Find out more: < https://www.warreneditions.com/>
