Stern’s now-controversial painting Arab Priest (1945) has recently returned to South Africa on loan from the Orientalist Museum in Doha, Qatar.  It is on exhibition at Iziko South African National Gallery until 23rd June in “Irma Stern’s ‘Arab Priest’: Image and Context”.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Iziko Curator of historical paintings Hayden Proud looks at the painting’s current contextualisation including the problematics of ‘Orientalism’ as well as the ‘Orientalist’ subtexts that are assumed to exist in Stern’s paintings executed in Zanzibar and other parts of Islamic Africa.  Her fascination with such supposedly ‘exotic’ subject-matter is something that she shared with many other South African painters of the colonial era. Their works will be highlighted by way of comparison.
