As part of the Friends’ Annual General Meeting (AGM), we are pleased to host two events open and free to the public, focusing on film.  They follow the AGM (which runs from 530pm to 630pm).

The launch of the Friends joining the Artists Films International (AFI), a partnership of 22 public art institutions around the world.  AFI was started and organised by the Whitechapel Gallery (London).  Each AFI partner nominates a film by an artist from their country and all AFI partners show each others’ nominated films, creating a “festival” that brings a South African film to the world and films from elsewhere in the world to South Africa.  The films correspond to a theme which changes annually: this year’s theme is “language”.  Be the first to find out more and who the South African nominated artist is.

We are pleased that film maker Michaela Limberis will also be speaking.  She will discuss her ‘Art Meets’ project, which she founded in 2013.  Art Meets is an exhibition platform, discussion forum, video content production agency and mobile app aimed at providing platforms and tools for living artists, and educational material for students and the public.  Art Meets TV’s first two artist documentaries are on Simon Stone and Penny Siopis.  Other Limberis projects include ‘Closer than ever’, pairing local artists with international artists to create image/film based works inspired by the limitations of their digital relationships.   She was an Assistant Curator at Zeitz MOCAA from 2017 to 2019; she graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2012.
