“Themes” is a series looking at some of the broad concepts that drive creativity, across the disciplines – visual arts, music, performance, architecture and design.  For each concept, two creatives are invited to consider how a particular theme informs their work.

This fourth iteration explores the theme of “form”.  Art and design is essentially about the form artists and designers give their work, and we look at the practice of two visual artists, Ian Grose and Doreen Southwood, in order to focus on some aspect of this rich and vast topic.

Ian Grose’s subject matters are both physical objects – such as interiors and people – and ephemeral ones – such as poetry and literature, and he paints in a manner neither completely representational nor abstract.   This complexity means his paintings of real world objects take on the quality of being a conceptual object, and some of his more abstracted smaller images appear as surfaces beneath which lie larger more corporeal things  Find out more:

Doreen Southwood is not only an artist but also a fashion designer, and explores the female body through both art and fashion.  Her clothing designs are flattering and conform to the expectations of clothing for the body.  Her sculptures of women, on the other hand, while also feminine, have an aura of disquietude and apprehension.  Collectively her clothing and sculptures speak of the complexity of the subject that is the female figure.  Find out more:
